Home Security Tips from a Master Thief

Published: 08/08/2011 by Home Alarm Directory

Is your home secure?  Many homeowners believe they have strong home security until they are burglarized and wonder what went wrong.  Walter T. Shaw, a professional retired burglar, robbed more than 2,200 homes from 1969 to the late 1980’s, including the home of Liberace.  Here are some of his home security tips on how you can keep thieves from invading your home.

Stay Quiet
According to Shaw, people talk way too much.  You should never tell total strangers when your next vacation is or about the business trip coming up.  Shaw says that some of his best informants were carpet installers, hairstylists and bank workers.  This home security rule holds true for social networking sites as well such as Facebook or Twitter.  If you want to make an announcement about your weekend getaway, do so after the trip has been completed.

Protect the rear of the house
Many homeowners forget that thieves typically case and enter from the back of the house.  Shaw states that the #1 way thieves enter a home is through the French or sliding doors in the back of the house.  In fact, he even left through the rear of the house just in case the police came through the front so he wouldn’t run into them.  Having a home security sign or decals in the front of the house may make a thief think twice before entering a home, but don’t forget the rear of the home as well.

Always activate your home security system
Shaw was always in disbelief when a home he entered had a home security system that wasn’t alarmed.  In fact, 90% of the homes he robbed had home security systems that weren’t in use.  Always turn your home security system on, even when you are home.  Some intruders won’t hesitate to rob you even if you are in the house.

Daytime jobs are preferable
Contrary to popular perception, thieves will rob a home during the day because there is a greater chance that no one is home.  People are either working or running errands during the day, and because many thieves can break into a home in less than 30 seconds without making a lot of noise, the daytime hours can make it easy for a home invasion.  That’s why it is vital to arm your home security system and lock all doors and windows, even if you are going on a quick errand, so that there is less likely of a chance you will become a victim.

Get a little dog
According to Shaw, he would never enter a home that had a yappy little dog.  They are a huge deterrent because they don’t stop barking and can attract attention from the neighbors.  Owning a huge dog that doesn’t bark isn’t as effective as a barking chihuahua.

Hide your valuables in the kitchen
The kitchen is the last place where robbers look, according to Shaw.  Thieves want to be in and out quickly, and looking through the kitchen takes too much time.  The first place that thieves search is the master bedroom because that’s where most people keep their valuables such as jewelry, electronics and cash.

Thieves hate video surveillance Thieves generally don’t have time to disable a video camera and because they don’t want evidence they have been robbing your home on tape, most burglars will avoid a house that has video cameras.  They also don’t know where the feed is being recorded.  To let thieves know you have video surveillance, be sure to post signs and stickers in the front and back yard so that they will walk right on by.

Guard your trash
Taking your trash out the night before may seem pro-active, but it can tip a burglar off about what you just bought.  According to Shaw, many homeowners will toss out a flat screen box or new appliance box which tell intruders exactly what you have in your home and how much it is worth.  Shaw says if you have anything delivered, have the boxes hauled away immediately.

You can be in control
When homeowners forget to do the “little things” they make a thief’s job much easier.  By following these home security tips and following other home security measures such as locking doors and windows and trimming bushes, you can stop any would-be thieves in their tracks.
